Spain's Carlos Machado and Portugal's Tiago Apolonia booked their places at the 2012 Olympic Games after reaching the Men's Singles final at the Final World Olympic Qualification Tournament on 13 May 2012 in Doha, Qatar. On Saturday 21 April at the 2012 Asian Olympic Qualification Tournament, the first two men and two women to qualify were Koki Niwa from Japan, Leung Chu Yan from Hong Kong China, Guo Yue from China and Ri Myong Sun from North Korea. All 4 have both booked their places at the 2012 Olympic Games. Play continues in Hong Kong with 6 more places still available for the men and for the women.

After day 2 of the 2012 North America Olympic Qualification Tournament, the first man and woman to qualify are Canada's Andre Ho and Ariel Hsing from the United States of America. They have both booked their places at the 2012 Olympic Games. The second stage of play continues in Cary on Saturday 21st April with two places still available for the men and one for women. Luxembourg host the European Qualification Tournament for the 2012 Olympic Games from Wednesday 11th to Sunday 15th April . A total of 11 men and 11 women will gain places for the London Olympics. The first stage of group matches take place on Wednesday 11th and Thursday 12th April. Players are in 16 groups of 3, 4 or 5 players and players finishing in first and second places in each group progress to the second stage, whilst those in the remaining places are eliminated.

The top two seeds in the Men's Team Event at the 2012 World Team Table Tennis Championships (China and Germany) are both still unbeaten after three days of play. China have so far beaten Greece 3-0, North Korea 3-0 and Sweden 3-0, whilst Germany have beaten the Czech Republic, Spain, Singapore and Portugal, also winning all three matches 3-0. However China's match yesterday against Sweden did not match up to their epic battles of the 1990s. Even though Jorgen Persson, a survivor from Sweden's all conquering team of the 90s and a former World Champion, played well, he is now past his best and the younger Chinese players are now too quick and too consistent. Scores... MA Lin beat Jorgen PERSSON 3-1 (11-8, 9-11, 11-5, 11-9) MA Long beat Kristian KARLSSON 3-0 (11-3, 11-4, 11-4) ZHANG Jike beat Robert SVENSSON 3-1 (9-11, 11-6, 11-6, 11-6) Germany's Timo Boll, Dimitrij Ovcharov and Bastian Steger saw off the difficult challenge of Portugal, with each player winning their individual matches 3-1 against Marcos Freitas, Joao Monteiro and Enio Mendes. The top two seeds in the Men's Team Event at the 2012 World Team Table Tennis Championships (China and Germany), both had solid starts to their campaigns. China beat Greece 3-0, whilst Germany had wins over the Czech Republic and Spain, winning both matches 3-0.

Manchester United and England footballers Wayne Rooney and Rio Ferdinand, gave their support to the BBC-backed charity appeal Sports Relief this week when they swapped footballs for table tennis balls in a special game of table tennis with pupils from the Harris School in Preston. The Sport Relief Weekend is taking place in the UK from Friday 23rd to Sunday 25th March 2012 and it'll be three whole days of energy, entertainment and events to help the nation go the extra mile. The BBC report that the President of the USA has been given a customised Dunlop table tennis table by the Prime Minister of the UK to commemorate their US visit this week. The exchange of gifts is a traditional part of state visits and the table tennis table was chosen as a reminder of the match the two men played against school children in south London last year. The gift also included table tennis rackets adorned with UK and US flags.
